DETROIT, May 29 (UPI) -- Severe thunderstorms Sunday knocked out power for 100,000 people in Michigan and caused the cancellation of at least 450 flights out of Chicago.
Damaging winds and heavy rains accompanied a tornado watch issued for 34 counties in Michigan, the National Weather Service said.
"We've got lots of wires down all over the place," Jay Jacobs, a spokesman for Consumers Power, told the Detroit Free Press. He said crews would work nonstop through Monday to restore service.
Delays at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport reached up to 3 hours, and at least 450 flights were canceled as of 3:30 p.m., NBC-TV, Chicago, reported.
An estimated 18,000 households in the Chicago area were without power, and a flood watch was issued for the Windy City.
