India plane crash kills scores; 8 survive

NEW DELHI — Eight people escaped the crash of an Indian jetliner with 166 people on board that overshot a hilltop runway in southern India and plunged over a cliff, officials said. At least some of the survivors managed to jump from the wreckage just before it burst into flames.

Firefighters struggled to reach the twisted, smoking wreckage of the Boeing 737-800, which was scattered along the hillside of thick grass and trees just outside Mangalore's Bajpe airport.

But after the first few minutes, there were no more survivors to be found around what remained of the Air India Express flight from Dubai to this port city. Instead, scores of burned bodies were pulled from the blackened tangle of aircraft cables, twisted metal, charred trees and mud at the crash site. Many of the dead were strapped into their seats, their bodies burned beyond recognition.

There were unconfirmed reports the child was taken to a Mangalore hospital with severe burns, but the child's fate was not immediately known.

Air India, the country's national carrier, runs inexpensive flights under the Air India Express banner to Dubai and other Middle Eastern destinations where millions of Indians are employed.

Relatives of the victims, who had been waiting at the airport for the plane's arrival, stood near the wreckage weeping.

Air India Express Mangalore crash

Flight IX812 from Dubai to Mangalore crashed, leaving 158 people dead (one died in hospital), and 8 survivors. The plane overshot the touchdown area of runway (number 06/24) and crossed the spillover area of 90 metres before it crashed into the forest. One of the wings hit a concrete localiser instrument, a navigation aid at the end of the spillover area, and fell down. The plane spun out of control whilst smashing into a ravine, breaking up and bursting into flames.

Nearby villagers were among the first to rush the accident site but billowing flames kept them away from assisting those in plane who were screaming "Banchao! Banchao!" (Save me! Save me!). Mangalore Airport police & firemen soon began rescue operations, coming across mangled bodies strewn over a large area, amongst a blackened tangle of aircraft cables, charred trees, mud and twisted metal. Only the plane's tail was left intact.

Some charred bodies still had seat belts on. As firemen doused the flames, policemen started hauling bodies from the wreckage, many burnt beyond recognition. Each body was carried up the ravine by hand before being transferred to ambulances (some 25 ambulances and over 20 fire tenders were involved). Rescue operations were hampered for an hour by the drizzle turned into heavy rains.

Air India flight crashes

A plane has crashed in southern Indian, leaving 160 feared dead.

The Boeing 737-800 Air Indian Express service from Dubai overshot the runway at Mangalore airport.

According to local reports there may be a small number of survivors.

But a police superintendent quoted on BBC news said the chances of finding survivors were "bleak" as most of the plane had been burnt out.

The BBC report also said that smoke from the crash site was so bad that it was difficult for rescue workers to get close to the plane.

Mangalore airport is situated at the top of a hill and is known for having a challenging landing approach for pilots.
