DGCA takes steps to avoid flight delays

The new rule, issued in October 2009 but brought into force this week, is to ensure that there are no flight delays. Instead of the earlier closure of counters 30 minutes before the  departure, they will now close 10 minutes earlier than this.

Thus, the check-in counters for all domestic flights leaving Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Chennai will now close 40 minutes before departure. However, the boarding gates will close only 15 minutes before the departure.

Kingfisher Airlines was the first to implement this directive of the Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

“This change has been necessitated to ensure compliance with the directions and procedures specified in air transport circular 10 of 2009 issued by the DGCA and which is being implemented by the DGCA now,” said an airline spokesman. “This effectively means that our check-in counters will close 10 minutes earlier than they used to,” he added.

Under the new rules, if airlines fail to push back (when a tractor hauls the plane to the taxiway) within the allotted time, they are given new slots 30-90 minutes later.
