Want to Avoid Domestic Flight Delays in India? Travel with IndiGo or Jet.

One of the most frustrating problems when flying domestically in India is flight delays. Around one in every four domestic departures take off more than 15 minutes behind schedule. The biggest reason for the flight delays? The late arrival of aircraft from previous destinations.
The good news for passengers is that the Indian government is trying to make airlines accountable for these delays. It's now monitoring the on-time performance of indian domestic airlines and requiring them to give specific reasons for the delay of each flight.
According to performance data from April 27 to May 10, 2009, IndiGo and Jet Airways had the lowest number of flight delays. 88% and 87% of their flights left on time, respectively. Personally, I've always found IndiGo to be very reliable. This is a pleasant surprise, given that it's a low cost airline.
The worst performing airline was MDLR -- a north Indian regional carrier. Only 24% of its flights departed on time. GoAir was in second last position, with 70% of its flights leaving on time. The on-time performance of other airlines ranged from 76% for JetLite down to 72% for SpiceJet. Air India and Kingfisher Airlines both scored 75%.
